No. Nothing economical can. Whole-home SPDs handle utility-side surges and induced surges from nearby strikes, which is the vast majority of damaging events out here.
Most units carry a 10 to 15 year design life, but each surge degrades the MOVs inside, and rural lightning shortens that life. The status indicator tells you when to replace.
NEC 230.67 requires it on new and replaced services. An existing service is grandfathered, but we recommend retrofit because the cost is low and rural lightning exposure is high.
