Lake Charles housing stock is wildly mixed. You have pre-WWII bungalows in the Charpentier Historic District, Margaret Place homes from the early 1900s, post-war ranch houses through Goosport and Lockmoor, mid-century brick across Prien and Walnut Grove, and newer subdivisions out toward Belle Savanne and Mallard Junction. What we work on most in Lake Charles
Service upgrades are the steady drumbeat. A lot of homes here still run on 100A panels with cloth-jacket SE cable feeding them. When a homeowner adds a heat pump, a hot tub, an EV charger, or a whole-home generator, the panel and service drop both have to be evaluated. We pull the meter, check the conductors per NEC 230, and write a real load calculation per Article 220. No guessing.
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels still show up across the older parts of town. Both have well-documented failure modes (Stab-Lok breakers that do not trip under fault, Zinsco bus internal arcing) and both get a frank conversation about replacement, not a band-aid breaker swap. Generator installs spiked after Hurricane Laura in August 2020 and Hurricane Delta six weeks later. Calcasieu Parish was hit head-on. Five years later we are still rebuilding and still installing standby systems. Most are Generac air-cooled units with a 200A service-rated automatic transfer switch, sized off a Manual J or measured-load survey, with a dedicated grounding electrode per NEC 250 and NFPA 37 clearances from openings. We pull the parish permit, schedule the Entergy disconnect, and coordinate the propane or natural gas hookup.
EV charging is the newest steady request. Most installs are Level 2 (40A or 48A circuits) per NEC 625, often with a load management module so we do not have to upsize the service. We mount the disconnect within sight, run rigid where exposed to UV, and pull the permit.
Historic district and older Lake Charles homes
If your house sits in Charpentier or Margaret Place, you should plan on a real electrical assessment before any remodel touches the walls. Knob-and-tube is still in service in plenty of attics and crawl spaces. We do not condemn it on sight, but it cannot share boxes with NM cable, it cannot run inside thermal insulation, and it has no equipment grounding conductor. Many of these homes also have a 60A service that simply will not carry a modern kitchen and laundry combination. We handle the rewire in stages where possible to keep the cost manageable.
Commercial work in Lake Charles
We run service calls and project work for small commercial customers around downtown, the medical corridor, and out toward Nelson Road. Common scopes: panelboard maintenance per NFPA 70B, lighting retrofits, parking lot pole repair, and tenant fit-out branch wiring.
