How surge protection installation works.
Type 1 SPD on the line side
For homes in particularly lightning-prone locations or with high equipment value, a Type 1 SPD installed on the line side of the main breaker (between the meter and the main) provides additional protection. Type 1 installs require coordination with Entergy for the meter pull. Less common than Type 2 in residential, more common in commercial.Point-of-use Type 3 SPD
Type 3 SPDs at sensitive equipment (computers, AV systems, HVAC thermostats, smart-home hubs) for layered defense. The whole-home SPD at the panel clamps most of the surge; the Type 3 at the equipment clamps any residual that gets through. SPDs divert surge energy to ground. The ground path has to be low-impedance for the SPD to work effectively. We verify the panel grounding (ground rod count, GEC size, bonding) before installing the SPD. Modern SPDs have status indicators (LED or alarm contacts) that show when the SPD has sacrificed itself in a large surge. Ground integrity check
Ground rod count and condition, GEC sizing, water and gas pipe bonding all verified. SPD performance depends on the ground path; correction work folded into the quote if needed.
Quote on paper
SPD cost, ground correction cost (if any), Type 3 device count for sensitive equipment, and labor. Permit if scope includes any work upstream of the main (Type 1 install).
Install
Panel killed at the main. SPD installed on the designated breaker position. Conductors landed per the SPD wiring diagram (line, neutral, ground). Ground continuity verified.
Test and document
SPD status indicator verified operational. Type 3 devices installed at the specified equipment locations. Written invoice with the SPD model, the surge current rating, and the installation date for warranty reference.

Surge protection installation follows NEC 230.67 (2020 NEC requirement for SPD at dwelling unit service equipment), NEC 285 for SPD installation generally, NEC 250 (including 250.53 25-ohm rod threshold and 250.66 GEC sizing) for grounding integrity, and NEC 110.3(B) for install per manufacturer instructions. SPDs are UL 1449 listed at the appropriate Type for the install location. Surge current rating at least 80 kA per phase for residential whole-home installs. Ground path integrity is verified before SPD install because the SPD performance depends on low-impedance ground for surge diversion. When to call us in for surge protection installation
Most surge protection installation calls in SWLA come up while a homeowner is already planning something else: a remodel, a generator install before the next hurricane season, an EV charger in the carport, or sizing the service to handle a new addition. Walking the property early keeps the sequencing clean. Get us in before the drywall closes and you avoid a rip-out. Get us in before you sign with the GC and you avoid a scope fight. Even if the install is still six months out, a planning walk is welcome.
What we walk on the first visit

What surge protection installation in Lake Charles looks like
A surge protective device (SPD) clamps voltage spikes to a safe level before they reach your equipment. The most common surge source in Calcasieu Parish is lightning, which is frequent in the warm season. Other sources include utility switching events, large motor starts on the same transformer, and storm-related grid disturbances. NEC 230.67 (as adopted in the 2020 NEC) requires a Type 1 or Type 2 SPD at the service equipment for new and replacement dwelling unit services. Calcasieu Parish AHJ adopts the version of the NEC effective at the time of permit, and current panel upgrades typically include the SPD requirement.
Types of surge protective devices
Type 1 SPDs install on the line side of the main breaker (between the meter and the main). Type 2 SPDs install on the load side of the main breaker, typically as a breaker-mounted or panel-mounted device. Type 3 SPDs install at the point of use (plug strips, outlet-mounted devices). The standard residential install is a Type 2 SPD at the panel, often with Type 3 SPDs at the most sensitive equipment (computers, AV systems, HVAC controls).
What an SPD does and does not do
SPDs clamp short-duration voltage spikes (microseconds to milliseconds) to a safe level. They divert the surge energy to ground. They do not protect against long-duration overvoltage (sustained voltage above normal range, which is a service-side neutral failure), they do not protect against direct lightning strike on the structure (that requires NFPA 780 lightning protection system, a separate scope), and they have a finite surge-energy capacity (large surges can sacrifice the SPD itself, which is the design behavior).
NEC and code points
NEC 230.67 (2020 NEC) requires Type 1 or Type 2 SPD at dwelling unit service equipment. NEC 285 covers surge protective devices generally. NEC 250 grounding requirements apply because the SPD diverts surge energy to ground. NEC 110.3(B) install per manufacturer instructions.
Lake Charles specifics
Lightning frequency in Calcasieu Parish is among the higher rates in the United States. The Vaisala lightning detection network shows the Gulf Coast region averaging 8 to 12 lightning strikes per square kilometer per year. That frequency drives high surge-related equipment damage in homes without SPD protection. Hurricane Laura and Delta in 2020 also produced widespread surge events as the grid came back online in stages.
SPD brand selection
Eaton, Siemens, Square D, and Leviton all make panel-mounted SPDs that fit current Square D, Eaton, and Siemens panels respectively. SPD ratings (joules, clamping voltage, response time) vary across products. We install SPDs with at least 80 kA per phase surge current rating and UL 1449 Type 1 or Type 2 listing. The higher-rated SPDs survive larger and more frequent surges.
What sacrificial mode means in practice
SPDs are designed to take the surge so your equipment does not. A direct or near-by lightning strike can sacrifice the SPD in a single event. The SPD status indicator changes to show the device is no longer protecting. Replacement is straightforward at the breaker; we can usually do it in a single short visit. The cost of an SPD replacement is small compared to the cost of replacing the equipment the SPD protected during the event.
Coordination with whole-home generator install
Whole-home standby generators include their own internal surge handling on the generator output, but they do not protect from utility-side surges that occur before the transfer to generator. SPD installed at the panel still provides utility-side surge protection on a home with a standby generator. The two systems are complementary, not redundant.
Insurance considerations
Some homeowner insurance carriers offer small premium discounts for installed SPDs. Surge damage claims are sometimes paid more quickly when the home has documented surge protection because the carrier sees the proactive damage mitigation. Documentation of the SPD install (brand, model, surge current rating, installation date, panel location) supports any carrier discussion.
What surge protection does not protect against
SPDs do not protect against direct lightning strike on the structure (that is NFPA 780 lightning protection scope). SPDs do not protect against sustained overvoltage from a service-side neutral failure. SPDs do not protect against undervoltage events. They protect against short-duration voltage spikes, which is the most common surge type and the leading cause of surge-related equipment damage.
Warranty
SPD manufacturer warranties typically include both device warranty (10 to 25 years on the SPD itself) and a connected equipment warranty (some manufacturers cover up to $50,000 of connected equipment damage if the SPD fails to protect within its rated surge current capacity). The connected equipment warranty has specific claim requirements that we explain at install.

Do I really need surge protection?
In Lake Charles, yes, especially during the warm season when lightning is frequent. The Gulf Coast has one of the higher lightning strike rates in the United States. Modern homes have significant electronics value (HVAC controls, smart-home hubs, AV systems, computers, appliance controls) that surge events can damage in a single strike. The SPD cost is small compared to the equipment it protects.
How much does whole-home surge protection cost?
A Type 2 panel-mounted SPD installed in Lake Charles typically runs $400 to $800 including the device, install, and any minor ground work. Higher-end SPDs with monitoring and longer warranties cost more. Type 1 line-side SPDs add about $300 to $500 plus the Entergy meter-pull coordination.
Will a power strip with surge protection do the same thing?
