Lighting installation in Lake Charles
Lighting is one of the biggest visual changes you can make to a house or a business. A dark kitchen turns into a working kitchen with the right cans and the right color temperature. A blank ceiling gets a chandelier and the dining room reads differently. A storefront becomes visible at night with the right wall packs and sign light. We install residential, commercial, exterior, and specialty lighting across Lake Charles and the parishes around it.
Residential lighting
Recessed cans and LED retrofits
Recessed lighting works best when the spacing and color temperature match the room. Kitchens and work areas typically want 3000K-4000K cans on 4-foot centers. Living rooms and bedrooms want warmer 2700K-3000K with wider spacing. New LED can retrofits include traditional housings with LED inserts, and the newer “wafer light” or “ultra-thin LED” that mounts in a junction box without a full housing. Either works. The wafer style is faster to install on remodels because we do not have to fit a full can between joists. NEC 410.137 covers clearance from insulation and we install IC-rated housings on any insulated ceiling.
Chandeliers, pendants, and decorative fixtures
Dining room chandeliers, kitchen island pendants, foyer fixtures, and hallway lights. For chandeliers over 50 lb we install a brace box rated for the weight per NEC 314.27. For long-stem pendants we measure the drop and confirm the head clearance. Most decorative fixtures pair best with a LED-rated dimmer for mood control.
Under-cabinet, accent, and task lighting
Under-cabinet LED strips or pucks for kitchen counters. Accent lighting on stair treads, behind TVs, and inside cabinets. Task lighting at desks, workshops, and laundry rooms. Low-voltage LED systems with transformers are common for these and we install the transformer in an accessible location, not buried in a ceiling.
Ceiling fans with lights
Fan-rated boxes per NEC 314.27, fan-light combinations, remote controls, and wall-mount controllers. We separate the fan and light circuits (or split a single switch wire) so the fan and light operate independently. Smart ceiling fans need a neutral at the switch box per NEC 404.2.
Commercial lighting
Office troffers (2×2 and 2×4 LED), pendant lighting for retail, can lighting for restaurants, sign circuits with NEC 600.6 disconnects, exterior wall packs, parking lot poles, and emergency egress lighting per NFPA 101. Retrofitting old fluorescent troffers to LED retrofit kits is a common project. We can do the lighting upgrade in occupied buildings after hours so the tenant does not have to relocate.
Exterior lighting
Wall packs, soffit lights, floods
Exterior building lighting on photocell or astronomical time clock control. Wet-location-rated fixtures per NEC 410.10. For homes in coastal-adjacent areas (Cameron Parish, near the lake, on the river), salt humid air corrodes standard fixtures quickly. We specify marine-grade stainless or galvanized hardware on those installs.
Landscape and accent
Low-voltage landscape lighting on 12V transformers, with LED path lights, well lights, uplights, and step lights. Transformer in an accessible location, sized for the total wattage plus headroom. Quality fixtures last 5-10 years in Louisiana humidity. Cheap fixtures fail in 1-2 years.
Pool, spa, and dock lighting
Underwater pool lights operate at low voltage through an isolating transformer per NEC 680. Pool deck lighting needs GFCI protection if the fixture is within 10ft of the water. Dock lighting on waterfront properties needs marine-rated hardware and follows NEC 555 marina rules where applicable.
Color temperature, CRI, and dimming
Color temperature: warm (2700K-3000K) for living spaces, neutral (3500K-4000K) for kitchens and work areas, cool (4500K-5000K) for garages and shops. CRI (Color Rendering Index) of 90+ for any space where colors matter (kitchen, bath, retail display). Dimming requires LED-rated dimmers matched to the bulb or fixture driver. Most “flickering LED” complaints trace back to a non-LED-rated dimmer.
