New fan locations
A ceiling that has no existing box for the fan needs a new box installed with attic access (rough-in from above) or from below with an old-work fan-rated box that braces between joists. New switch leg pulled from the closest accessible switch box, or remote control installed with no new switch wiring. The full scope is quoted on paper.Outdoor and damp-rated fans
Covered porch and patio fans must be wet-rated or damp-rated per the location and the fan listing. We verify the rating, install with the fan-rated outdoor outlet box, and connect via GFCI protection per NEC 210.8(A)(3) for outdoor receptacles where the circuit is shared. Box swap
Old box removed. New fan-rated box installed with bracing between joists. From attic access where available, or with an old-work box from below.

Fan assembly
Fan assembled per the manufacturer instructions. Downrod length set per ceiling height (8-foot ceilings use the shortest downrod or a hugger mount, taller ceilings use longer downrods).

Mount and wire
Fan mounted to the fan-rated box. Equipment ground connected. Conductors terminated per NEC 110.14. Switch leg or remote receiver wired per the control method.

Balance and test
Fan switched on, balanced if wobble appears (balance kit included with most fans), all speeds tested, light tested if integrated, remote paired if applicable, direction reverse tested.

When to call us in for ceiling fan installation
Most ceiling fan installation calls in SWLA come up while a homeowner is already planning something else: a remodel, a generator install before the next hurricane season, an EV charger in the carport, or sizing the service to handle a new addition. Walking the property early keeps the sequencing clean. Get us in before the drywall closes and you avoid a rip-out. Get us in before you sign with the GC and you avoid a scope fight. Even if the install is still six months out, a planning walk is welcome.
What we walk on the first visit
We pull the panel cover, check the age and brand (Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco still show up around Lake Charles often enough), look at breaker space and conduit access, and crawl the attic or pier space if the run goes that way. For anything that touches the service drop we coordinate the cut with Entergy or Cleco from day one. The number we hand you is fixed for the scope we walked. What ceiling fan installation in Lake Charles looks like
Ceiling fans are common in Calcasieu Parish for a reason. The climate runs warm and humid most of the year, and a fan moves the air enough to make the room feel several degrees cooler without dropping the thermostat. Hayes Electrical installs fans as standalone scopes (new fan replacing a light fixture, or new fan on a previously unwired ceiling box) and as part of remodel scopes (whole-room or whole-house fan installs in renovations).
The install is straightforward in principle. The critical detail is the box. NEC 314.27 requires a fan-rated box for any ceiling fan, and standard ceiling fixture boxes are not fan-rated. The box swap is part of the install scope on most replacements, and it is the single most important safety detail on the job.

Box requirements
NEC 314.27(C) requires fan-rated outlet boxes for ceiling fans. The box must be listed for the fan weight and the cyclical loads (a fan’s wobble and start-stop torque is a fatigue load on the box, not just static weight). Standard ceiling fixture boxes are rated for static fixture weight up to 50 pounds; they are not fan-rated regardless of weight. The box swap on a fixture-to-fan install is required.

Lake Charles specifics
Outdoor fans on porches and patios need wet-rated or damp-rated listing per the location. A wet-rated fan tolerates direct rain. A damp-rated fan tolerates humidity and overspray but not direct rain. Most covered porches qualify as damp locations and accept damp-rated fans, but a fully exposed pergola location needs a wet-rated unit. We verify the rating against the location on the install.
Wiring scenarios
Single switch leg controls the fan and the light together (older standard). Two switch legs with separate fan and light control (newer standard, often retrofit with a remote-control receiver in the canopy rather than running new switch leg cable). Pull chain only with no wall switch (cottage and outbuilding installs). Remote-only control with a wall-mounted RF receiver or a smart switch. We tell you what the existing switching can do and what the upgrade path is.
What a balance issue tells us
A fan that wobbles visibly is usually a blade-to-motor imbalance. Most fans ship with a balance kit (small adhesive weights) and balance to acceptable wobble in 15 to 20 minutes. Persistent wobble after balancing often indicates a loose box mounting, which is a real fall risk that the balance kit cannot fix. We secure the box mounting if the issue is at the mount, not the blades.
Reverse direction operation
Most fans support both directions: downdraft (counterclockwise looking up) for cooling in summer and updraft (clockwise looking up) for circulating warm air in winter without creating a wind-chill on people below. We verify both directions work and explain the seasonal use to the homeowner.
Smart fan integration
Smart fans (Hunter SimpleConnect, Big Ass Fans, others) integrate with smart-home ecosystems for speed and direction control through the app or voice. The install adds a hub setup step after the physical install. We complete the hub pairing and demonstrate the app and voice control before we leave.
Outdoor fan considerations
Covered porch fans need damp-rated listing. Fully-exposed (pergola, gazebo without solid roof) fans need wet-rated listing. The blade material matters too: tropical hardwood blades hold up better in humidity than standard MDF or plywood blades, which can warp from moisture absorption.
Permit considerations
Like-for-like fan replacement on an existing fan-rated box typically does not require a Calcasieu Parish permit. New fan locations with new wiring or new switch legs do require a permit. The box swap from fixture-rated to fan-rated is part of any install where the existing box is not fan-rated.

Common questions about ceiling fan installation
Can I install a ceiling fan on the existing light fixture box?
Only if the box is stamped fan-rated. Most standard ceiling fixture boxes are not fan-rated. NEC 314.27(C) requires a fan-rated box for ceiling fan installation. Installing on a non-rated box is a fall hazard, because the cyclical motor loads stress the box differently than static fixture weight.
How much does a ceiling fan install cost?
