Cable with mechanical damage (nail or screw through, staple too tight, crushed) gets the damaged section cut out and replaced. New cable is spliced in using a junction box per NEC 314.29 (accessible) with wirenut splices or push-in connectors. The junction box gets an access cover. We do not bury splices behind drywall without an access cover, which is the most common DIY mistake we see on inherited repairs.Connection repair

How to know when it is time, and what to expect.
When to call us in for electrical wiring repair
Most electrical wiring repair calls fall into one of three patterns: a single component gave out and the symptom is obvious, a slowly loosening connection finally tripped or stopped working, or a previous repair (yours, a handyman, a prior contractor) was never quite right and the underlying issue resurfaced. If the symptom is smoke, sparks, a burning smell, or a panel hot to the touch, do not wait it out. Call the shop. Active hazards get same-day dispatch when capacity allows. Routine repairs go on the next slot, usually inside the same week here in SWLA.
What we walk on the first visit
The first 20 to 30 minutes is eyes and ears: walk the symptom with you, open the panel to spot anything related, trace the affected circuit, find the actual root rather than the easy answer. Most electrical wiring repair issues live somewhere other than where the symptom shows (lights flicker from a loose lug at the panel, an outlet quits because the next box downstream has a backstab going bad). What we repair versus replace
Local failures in otherwise sound wiring get spot repair: cut the damaged section out, splice in new cable with a junction box and code-compliant splices. Widespread degradation (knob-and-tube, deteriorated original wiring, multiple failure points on the same circuit) shifts the scope to rewire because spot repair on degraded wiring just shifts the failure to the next weak point.

Lake Charles specifics
Pre-1960 Calcasieu Parish housing sometimes has knob-and-tube wiring or early 1950s NM cable with degraded insulation. Both are at end-of-life and the right repair is sectional or whole-home rewire, not spot patches. 1965 to 1973 aluminum branch wiring is a connection failure mode rather than a cable failure mode, and we repair those connections with COPALUM or AlumiConn per CPSC alert guidance.
Water damage scope
Cable that has been submerged or that has visible water inside the jacket gets replaced, not dried. Insulation integrity is the problem, not just surface moisture, and there is no field test that confirms long-term insulation health on a flood-soaked cable. After Hurricane Laura and Delta in 2020 we saw many flood-related wiring repairs that needed sectional replacement.
How we find buried damage
A circuit dead at the panel but still showing voltage at one end of the run tells us the failure is downstream of that point. We move forward one device at a time, testing at each box, until we find the dead segment. Tone generators (a signal injected at one end of the cable, traced with a receiver in the wall) help on long runs through hidden cavities. Thermal imagers find recent failures by the heat signature. Most buried-damage traces complete inside 90 minutes from arrival.
Coordination with insurance on water and fire damage
For water-damaged or fire-damaged wiring, we document the cause with photos and a written summary for your insurance carrier. Submerged cable is replaced as the standard restoration scope; insulation resistance does not return to specified dielectric strength after submersion. Fire-damaged cable in the heat-affected zone is replaced even if it visually appears intact, because the insulation degrades from the heat exposure even without char.
Why we will not bury a splice in a wall
NEC 314.29 requires every splice to remain accessible. Splices buried behind drywall without an access cover are the most common code violation we find on inherited repairs from prior owners or unlicensed work. The fix when we find them is to install an access cover at the splice location or to relocate the splice to an accessible junction box. We never create a new buried splice as part of our work.

Common questions about electrical wiring repair
Can you find wiring damage behind walls without tearing them open?
Most of the time. A tone generator and a fish tape let us follow cable through walls and locate the failure point. Sometimes a small access hole is needed at the failure location, which we cut clean. Whole-wall demolition is rare and only when the cable runs are buried in framing that cannot be opened from access points.
How much does a typical wiring repair cost?
A spot repair on a dead circuit usually runs $300 to $600 depending on access and the length of the damaged section. Aluminum branch wiring connection repair at devices runs $80 to $150 per device for COPALUM or AlumiConn. Whole-circuit rewire on a degraded run is a separate scope quoted on the visit.
Will my insurance cover storm or water damaged wiring?
Most homeowners policies cover storm and accidental water damage to wiring. We provide cause-of-loss documentation, photos of the damaged cable, and an itemized scope for the carrier. Flood damage from rising water has separate coverage rules and may need flood insurance, which is between you and the carrier.
I heard knob-and-tube is dangerous. Is it true?
Knob-and-tube itself is not inherently dangerous when undisturbed in dry conditions, but it is at end-of-life in most Lake Charles homes that still have it, often with insulation degradation and prior amateur splices. Insurance carriers increasingly will not write coverage on knob-and-tube. The right scope is rewire, not spot repair.
Do you patch the wall after the repair?
We can patch drywall as a separate scope or leave the access for your patcher or general contractor. Patch work is broken out as a line item on the quote so you see the cost and choose. We do not include patch in the wiring repair price by default.
Can I keep the existing aluminum wiring and just have you repair the connections?
Yes. COPALUM crimp or AlumiConn lug repair at every device on an aluminum branch circuit is the CPSC-recognized method to keep the aluminum branch in service safely. Whole-home aluminum branch repair (every device) is one to two days of work and significantly cheaper than a rewire.
