How circuit breaker repair works.
Federal Pacific and Zinsco replacement
We do not recommend spot breaker replacement on Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco panels. The replacement breakers are new-old-stock or refurbished, and the failure mode (refuses to trip on overcurrent) is documented on the original devices and is not improved by a refurbished replacement. The right scope is a full panel replacement to current Square D, Eaton, or Siemens equipment.Trip cause diagnosis
A breaker that trips repeatedly is usually a circuit problem, not a breaker problem. We measure the actual circuit load with a clamp meter, check for ground faults with an insulation resistance test, look for shared neutrals on multi-wire branch circuits, and inspect the wiring at each device. The fix is to address the circuit cause, not to put a bigger breaker on undersized wire.AFCI breaker troubleshooting
AFCI breakers nuisance-trip on older first-generation Square D combination AFCI designs when certain loads run (vacuums, blenders, some LED dimmable lighting). The fix is a newer-generation AFCI with better waveform signature filtering, not a circuit chase. We carry current-generation Square D, Eaton, and Siemens AFCI on the truck.Bus damage assessment
A burned or pitted bus where a breaker connects is not a breaker problem. The panel itself needs to come out. We open the panel, scan with a thermal imager, and inspect each bus stab. Damaged bus on a current Square D, Eaton, or Siemens panel means panel replacement, not breaker replacement, because we do not put a new breaker onto compromised bus.Our process
Symptom triage
You describe how the breaker is behaving (trips often, trips and will not reset, gets warm, makes noise). The pattern tells us whether the diagnosis is at the breaker or at the circuit.
Panel open and inspect
We kill the main, open the panel, and visually inspect the suspect breaker for discoloration, the bus stab for damage, and the breaker connections for tightness.
Test the circuit
Clamp meter on the load to measure actual draw. Insulation resistance test for ground faults. Verification that the circuit is properly sized for its load.
Diagnose and decide
If the breaker is the failed device, replacement is the scope. If the circuit is the problem, we trace and address the circuit cause. Either path gets quoted on paper before any work continues.
Replace or repair
Matching manufacturer-listed breaker installed with NEC 110.14 torque values at the lug. Or, on a circuit-cause finding, the device or splice failure repaired at the source.
Test and document
Replaced breaker manual-tested and load-tested. Panel index updated. Written invoice with the diagnosis, the scope completed, and the cause documented.
Permits and inspections
Some jobs need a permit in Calcasieu, some do not. When the parish or city wants one, we pull it under LA Lic #73821, set the rough-in and final inspection, and stay on the job until the inspector signs off. You do not touch the paperwork.
What's covered
Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee on every install. If our work fails because of how we put it in, we come back and fix it at no charge. Documented in writing at handoff and stays with the home.
What we check before recommending a fix
Breaker replacement work follows NEC 110.3(B) for listed-device compliance, NEC 110.14 for termination torque, NEC 240 for overcurrent matching, and NEC 408 for panel work. Panel is de-energized with the main off and verified dead with a Fluke 87V at the bus before any breaker contact. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco breakers are not spot-replaced because the documented failed-trip rate is not improved by refurbished or new-old-stock replacements per long-standing CPSC field history. Damaged or pitted bus is a panel-replacement scope, not a breaker scope, because new breakers on compromised bus will fail prematurely.

When to call us in for circuit breaker repair
Most circuit breaker repair calls fall into one of three patterns: a single component gave out and the symptom is obvious, a slowly loosening connection finally tripped or stopped working, or a previous repair (yours, a handyman, a prior contractor) was never quite right and the underlying issue resurfaced. If the symptom is smoke, sparks, a burning smell, or a panel hot to the touch, do not wait it out. Call the shop. Active hazards get same-day dispatch when capacity allows. Routine repairs go on the next slot, usually inside the same week here in SWLA.
What we walk on the first visit
The first 20 to 30 minutes is eyes and ears: walk the symptom with you, open the panel to spot anything related, trace the affected circuit, find the actual root rather than the easy answer. Most circuit breaker repair issues live somewhere other than where the symptom shows (lights flicker from a loose lug at the panel, an outlet quits because the next box downstream has a backstab going bad). The diagnostic is the real job, the price reflects that. We write the scope after the diagnosis, not before.
What circuit breaker repair in Lake Charles actually covers
A circuit breaker is not really repaired. It is replaced. The internals are not field-serviceable and the manufacturers do not sell replacement parts. What we do is diagnose whether the breaker has actually failed (versus a downstream circuit problem causing it to trip correctly), and replace the failed device with a matching new unit.
That nuance matters because a breaker that trips often is usually doing its job, not failing. The fix is to find what is loading the circuit beyond its rating or what is causing the ground fault or arc that triggered the trip. Hayes Electrical diagnoses to root cause before recommending breaker replacement.
How to tell a breaker has actually failed
A genuinely failed breaker has one of several symptoms: it will not reset (the handle returns to off the moment it is moved to on, with no load on the circuit), it sits in a tripped middle position even with no load, it feels hot to the touch with no load present, it shows visible discoloration or pitting at the contacts, or it shows a known failure pattern for that specific brand and model. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco breakers also exhibit the inverse failure: they refuse to trip on a real overcurrent, which is what makes those panels dangerous.
NEC and code points
NEC 110.3(B) requires the replacement breaker to be the manufacturer-listed device for the panel. Aftermarket and cross-brand breakers are not code-compliant. NEC 240 covers overcurrent protection in general and specifies the proper amperage selection for the conductor size. NEC 408 covers the panel and labeling requirements.
Lake Charles specifics
The Calcasieu Parish housing stock has a high proportion of Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels and a meaningful number of Zinsco panels still in service from the 1970s and 1980s. Replacement breakers for those panels are available only as new-old-stock or refurbished, and the failure rate on those replacements is not better than the original failed device. We recommend panel replacement, not breaker replacement, on Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco.
Brand-specific failure modes
Square D QO breakers are extremely reliable and rarely fail in normal service. Eaton CH and BR breakers are similarly reliable. Siemens breakers (and the legacy ITE breakers they replaced) are also reliable. GE THQL breakers have a higher field failure rate than the others. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok is a documented failure case (refuses to trip on overcurrent in a meaningful percentage of field tests). Zinsco is documented for both failed-trip and bus damage.
When a breaker repair is really a circuit problem
A breaker that trips repeatedly under normal load is doing its job. The circuit has something on it: too much load, a ground fault, an arc fault on AFCI circuits, or a shorted device. Replacing the breaker without diagnosing the circuit just moves the problem. We diagnose the circuit first.
What to expect on the diagnostic visit
We open the panel with the main off and dead-front off, inspect the suspect breaker visually, check the bus stab condition, measure the actual circuit load with a clamp meter, and test for ground faults with an insulation resistance tester. The diagnosis usually completes inside 45 minutes. You see the readings as we take them so the diagnosis is transparent. The breaker replacement (if needed) is quoted on the spot and completes same-visit on common breaker types.
When to call us versus call the utility
Breaker trips, panel issues, and branch circuit problems are our scope. Total power loss with neighbors also affected is utility scope (call Entergy first). Total power loss with neighbors still on is your side of the meter, which is our scope. Partial power loss (some rooms work, others do not) often points to a service-side neutral problem or a sub-panel failure and needs both our diagnosis and possibly Entergy coordination depending on what we find at the main.
Federal Pacific and Zinsco specifics
If you have one of these panels, we do not recommend spot breaker replacement. The documented failed-trip history is in the design, not in the individual breakers, and refurbished or new-old-stock replacement breakers do not improve the fundamental issue. Panel replacement to current Square D, Eaton, or Siemens equipment is the safe path, and we quote that scope honestly without high-pressure tactics.
What Southwest Louisiana says about our work
Real reviews from real customers across Lake Charles, Sulphur, Moss Bluff, and the surrounding parishes.
They were really helpful and got to me the next day, a storm came through and my electric box outside got messed up really bad, I only had half of my house working. It was a fire hazard, waiting to happen. I had called many places to come out to look at it and they was putting me off, it was so scary. I was so blessed when I called them the owner came out the same day and said that they could come out the next day to fix it. I thank God this company was so worried about my house catching on fire, so he put me in front of other customers because he was really concerned. I highly Recommend this company Hayes Electric to everyone out there for problems, they were very reasonable, it did not cost me a fortune that I did not have. And by the way to let everyone know they do have a payment plan if you do not have the money at the time of their service. I can't thank them enough for being so concerned about the problem that I had. Again Thank Yall SOOO MUCH AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!! TINA SCHIELE
Hayes Electrical has earned my business in the future. They saved me hundreds of dollars by referring me to Entergy first after hearing what my electrical issues were. They could have made easy money on a service call, and then refer me to Entergy. Instead, they did the right thing and had me contact Entergy first. 5 stars Nice to see a company that didn't take advantage of a customer. ❤️1
My experience with Hayse Electrical was a very possitive one. At my first meeting with Dorian and I explaining my situation with my problem I was having, he explained what the company was going to do in very precise detail, was able to quote me a price right away and set up an appointment in the meeting. On the day of my appointment McKenzie and Hayden called me ahead of time to say they were on their way and arrived when said time. They both worked continually all day til all the work was done. Both men were very nice and worked well together and alone. I would recommend Hayes Electrical, Dorian, Mckenzie and Hayden and I would use this company again.
Hayes electrical did a great job with my attic wiring issue. They were efficient; figured out the problem, described it to me in laymen's details and the plan to correct it, they cleaned up the area after. The problem was solved. Great personable interaction and will use them again.
Common questions about circuit breaker repair
Can a breaker really go bad on its own?
Yes, but it is uncommon on current Square D, Eaton, and Siemens products. The common case is the breaker is doing its job and the circuit has a real load or fault problem. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco are documented exceptions and fail at significantly higher rates than current products.
Why not just put a bigger breaker on it?
Because the breaker protects the wire, not the load. A 15 amp circuit on 14 AWG wire cannot be protected by a 20 amp breaker. NEC 240 sets the conductor-to-breaker matching, and a mismatched breaker is a fire risk. The fix is to reduce the load or pull a properly-sized new circuit.
Can I use an aftermarket breaker to save money?
No. NEC 110.3(B) requires the manufacturer-listed breaker for the panel. Aftermarket and cross-brand breakers void the panel listing and are not code-compliant. The price difference is small and not worth the safety and inspection risk.
My panel is Federal Pacific Stab-Lok. What should I do?
Replace the panel. CPSC and independent testing have documented a meaningful percentage of Stab-Lok breakers refusing to trip on real overcurrent faults. Replacement breakers do not solve the underlying design issue. The right scope is a current Square D, Eaton, or Siemens panel.
How much does a breaker replacement cost?
Standard breaker replacement on a current panel is typically $150 to $250 including parts, depending on the breaker amperage and brand. AFCI and GFCI breakers cost more because the device itself is $40 to $60. Federal Pacific and Zinsco scopes get the panel-replacement quote, not a breaker price.
Will replacing the breaker fix my flickering lights?
Almost never. Flickering lights are usually loose connections, voltage drop on long runs, failed fixtures, or service-side neutral problems. The breaker only opens on overcurrent, ground fault, or arc fault. Flickering needs a circuit-level trace, not a breaker swap.
