01 / HOW THIS WORKS

How dedicated circuit installation works.

Branch circuit pull

New cable pulled from the panel to the appliance location. Cable size matched to the breaker and the load per NEC 310 ampacity tables: 12 AWG copper for 20A circuits, 10 AWG for 30A, 8 AWG for 40A, 6 AWG for 50A and 60A. Routing through attic, crawl space, or finished wall cavity as the path allows. Cable supported per NEC 334.30 (within 12 inches of every box, at intervals not exceeding 4.5 feet).

Panel termination

New breaker installed in an available panel slot. Sized to the cable and the load per NEC 240. AFCI per NEC 210.12 on dwelling unit branch circuits where required. GFCI per NEC 210.8 in wet and damp locations. Conductor lands on the breaker with the lug torqued per NEC 110.14 values. Neutral lands on the neutral bar (or the breaker pigtail for AFCI and GFCI breakers).

Receptacle or hardwire termination

At the appliance location, the cable terminates in a receptacle (for cord-and-plug appliances) or a hardwire connection in a junction box (for fixed appliances like dishwashers and water heaters). Receptacle type matched to the load: NEMA 5-15 or 5-20 for 120V loads, NEMA 6-15 or 6-20 for 240V smaller loads, NEMA 14-30 for dryers, NEMA 14-50 for ranges and EV chargers, NEMA 6-50 for welders and some EV chargers. Tamper-resistant per NEC 406.12 in dwelling units.

Specific-appliance scope

Some appliance installs have additional scope. Sump pumps with battery backup require the backup integration and the battery monitoring. Hot tubs require GFCI protection per NEC 680.42 and bonding per NEC 680.26. EV chargers require the breaker, the receptacle, and (for hardwired chargers) the load calculation per NEC 625.41 and the EV-specific GFCI and AFCI considerations.

Permit and inspection

Calcasieu Parish AHJ requires a permit for new dedicated circuits in most cases. We pull the permit under our master license and schedule the inspection at completion. The inspection typically takes 30 to 60 minutes on the install and the homeowner does not need to be present (we coordinate access).
02 / PROCESS

Our process

01

Appliance and load review

You tell us what the circuit is for. We confirm the appliance amperage (from the nameplate or the spec sheet) and the receptacle type required.

02

Service capacity check

NEC 220 calculation verifies the existing service can handle the new load. If not, panel upgrade is added to the scope.

03

Quote on paper

Cable, breaker, receptacle or hardwire termination, any access cuts, permit, and labor. Patch responsibility for any access cuts in finished walls.

04

Permit if required

Calcasieu Parish AHJ permit pulled. Most new dedicated circuits require it.

05

Pull and terminate

Cable pulled, panel termination, appliance-side termination, all torqued per NEC 110.14 values.

06

Test and inspect

Circuit tested under load with the actual appliance running, voltage and amperage verified, AHJ inspection scheduled and signed off.

05 / WHO TO HIRE

Why hiring a licensed electrician matters.

Here is the no-spin cut on dedicated circuit installation. Same answer we would give a friend in Westlake or Carlyss, whether or not we end up winning the job.

Hayes Electrical

A licensed electrician

LA-licensed master electrician walks every call. Family-owned, owner-led, based in Lake Charles.
Permits pulled under LA Lic #73821 and inspections coordinated with the Calcasieu, Jeff Davis, Allen, or Cameron Parish AHJ when the work calls for it.
Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee in writing. If our work fails, we come back and fix it. Stays with the home.
Insured and carrying workers' comp on every truck that rolls.
Quote on paper before we cut the first wire. The signed number is the number you pay.
A handyman

Unlicensed for electrical

No LA state electrical license. Can swap a fixture, cannot legally touch a panel, a service entrance, or a rewire.
No permits. When the parish or city audits the work later, it does not pass.
No real warranty. "Call me if it breaks" falls apart the day you actually need it.
If unlicensed work starts a fire, your homeowner policy can flat-out deny the claim.
Cash discount sometimes shows up on the invoice. So does the next problem.
DIY

Doing it yourself

Cheap right up until something goes sideways. Most jobs need a load calc, NEC compliance, and a permit.
A failed inspection sends you back to redo it. Selling the house later, the buyer's inspector flags it the same way.
No warranty. The replacement is on you.
Hot wiring is no joke. Most fatal home electrical accidents in this country are DIY.
If you genuinely know what you are doing, fine. If you do not, call us first.
06 / HOW TO TELL IT IS TIME

How to know when it is time, and what to expect.

When to call us in for dedicated circuit installation

Most dedicated circuit installation calls in SWLA come up while a homeowner is already planning something else: a remodel, a generator install before the next hurricane season, an EV charger in the carport, or sizing the service to handle a new addition. Walking the property early keeps the sequencing clean. Get us in before the drywall closes and you avoid a rip-out. Get us in before you sign with the GC and you avoid a scope fight. Even if the install is still six months out, a planning walk is welcome.

What we walk on the first visit

We pull the panel cover, check the age and brand (Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco still show up around Lake Charles often enough), look at breaker space and conduit access, and crawl the attic or pier space if the run goes that way. For anything that touches the service drop we coordinate the cut with Entergy or Cleco from day one. The number we hand you is fixed for the scope we walked. Change orders only show up if we find something new in the wall, and you hear about it before we keep going.

What dedicated circuit installation in Lake Charles covers

A dedicated circuit serves a single appliance or load with no other devices on the same breaker. It is the right install when an appliance is high-draw enough to need its own protection (sump pumps, freezers, microwaves, refrigerators, dishwashers, garbage disposals, window AC units, space heaters, EV chargers, hot tubs), when the appliance is sensitive enough that sharing a circuit causes nuisance trips or voltage sag (some computer setups, AV systems, dental chairs in home offices), or when code requires it (NEC 210.11 specifies dedicated circuits for several specific dwelling unit loads).

Hayes Electrical installs dedicated circuits as standalone scopes, as part of remodel work, and as code-correction items on inspection lists. The work is targeted: pull a new circuit from the panel, run the cable to the appliance location, install the appropriate receptacle or hard-wire connection, terminate at both ends with NEC 110.14 compliance.

Where dedicated circuits are required by code

NEC 210.11 specifies dedicated circuits for the kitchen small appliance circuits (at least two 20A circuits per NEC 210.11(C)(1)), the laundry room receptacle (NEC 210.11(C)(2)), the bathroom receptacle (NEC 210.11(C)(3)), and the garage (NEC 210.11(C)(4)). Specific appliances have their own dedicated circuit requirements based on amperage and the manufacturer instructions.

Common dedicated circuit installs

Kitchen appliances (refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, garbage disposal each on their own circuit). Bathroom GFCI receptacle on a dedicated 20A circuit. Laundry room receptacle on a dedicated 20A circuit. Sump pump on a dedicated circuit (often with battery backup or generator-supplied for outage operation). Window AC units in older homes without central HVAC. EV chargers (32A, 40A, or 48A dedicated circuit per the charger nameplate). Hot tubs (typically 50A dedicated). Home office equipment (computers, dental chairs, kilns, high-end AV).

NEC and code points

NEC 210.11 specifies required dedicated circuits. NEC 210.19 conductor sizing. NEC 210.20 overcurrent protection sizing. NEC 220 load calculation to verify the existing service can handle the new circuit. NEC 240 overcurrent. NEC 250 grounding. NEC 334 NM cable. NEC 408 panel work. NEC 422 fixed appliance circuits (governs the conductor sizing and the overcurrent for hardwired appliances).

Lake Charles specifics

Sump pumps in homes with chronic moisture or in areas prone to storm flooding often go on dedicated circuits with battery backup. Some homes feed the sump pump from the generator-supplied side of the panel when a standby generator is installed, so the pump runs during an outage. Coastal humidity also drives more dehumidifier and window AC units, which benefit from dedicated circuits for the load they pull.

Service capacity check

Adding a new dedicated circuit requires checking that the existing service can handle the additional load. NEC 220 calculation is run on the quote visit. For most homes with available panel slots and headroom, adding a single dedicated circuit is straightforward. For homes already near service capacity, the conversation shifts to a panel upgrade as part of the scope.

Common appliance-specific notes

EV chargers: NEC 625.41 requires the branch circuit to be sized to 125 percent of the charger nameplate. A 40A charger needs a 50A circuit per the calculation. Hot tubs: NEC 680.42 requires GFCI on the supply circuit. Sump pumps: a battery-backup option keeps the pump running during an outage on the main circuit, or generator-supplied integration runs the pump from standby power. Range and dryer: dedicated 240V circuits with the matching NEMA receptacle (14-30 for dryer, 14-50 for range).

Permit and inspection

Calcasieu Parish AHJ permit required for most new dedicated circuits, especially appliance circuits and circuits that involve service-side capacity considerations. Inspection at completion verifies the conductor sizing, breaker sizing, GFCI and AFCI compliance where applicable, and the receptacle type. We schedule the inspection and are present when the inspector arrives.

What the cost depends on

Cable run length is the biggest variable. A new dedicated circuit terminating 10 feet from the panel costs much less than one terminating 50 feet away through finished walls. Access difficulty (open framing versus finished walls) is the second variable. Device type (standard 120V outlet versus 240V NEMA 14-50) is the third.

Warranty

Standard install warranty is one year on labor. Breaker manufacturer warranty (typically 10 years on Square D QO, similar on Eaton and Siemens) covers the protection device. We file warranty claims on the device manufacturer on your behalf for any device-specific issue.

When the right answer is a sub-panel

If you are adding multiple new dedicated circuits to a single area of the house (workshop, addition, garage with multiple appliances), running a single sub-panel feed to a new local sub-panel is often cheaper than running multiple long branch circuit pulls. We calculate both options on the quote when the scope might justify a sub-panel.

My parents have an older home and was having an issue with circuits overloading. We contacted Hayes after seeing they had rave reviews. They sent someone right over, diagnosed the issue and gave us a few pricing package options. We selected the pricing package that was most affordable for us and scheduled their appointment to come back and do the work. On the day scheduled, two gentlemen arrived promptly, did a walk through assessment and helped us understand everything they would be doing and got right to work! They were professional, efficient and very thorough. My parents circuits were rerouted and are working better than ever!

We turned to the company for help to find out the reason why our generator stopped working, fix the problem and start it. We were served by Dorian, a very nice young man, a good specialist and a professional in his field. Everything went well, Dorian did diagnostics, invited a mechanic and our generator works. We recommend this company if you have problems with the generator.

Common questions about dedicated circuit installation

How much does a dedicated circuit cost?

A typical dedicated 20A 120V circuit in Lake Charles runs $400 to $800 depending on cable run length and access. A 30A or 50A 240V circuit runs $500 to $1,200. EV charger and hot tub circuits are often on the higher end because of the longer runs to typical install locations.

Do I need a dedicated circuit for my refrigerator?

Current NEC requires GFCI protection on kitchen receptacles per NEC 210.8(A), which often makes a dedicated GFCI circuit the cleanest install for the refrigerator. Older code did not require dedicated, and existing non-dedicated refrigerator circuits are usually grandfathered. New installs and remodels typically run a dedicated circuit.

Will my panel have room for a new dedicated circuit?

Depends on your panel size and how many circuits are already in use. We check on the quote visit. Most 200A 40-space panels have available slots. Panels that are full sometimes accept tandem breakers (two circuits in one slot) where the panel and bus allow it. Otherwise the conversation shifts to a panel upgrade or a sub-panel.

Can you run a dedicated circuit through finished walls?

Yes, in most cases. Fish-and-pull through wall cavities with small access cuts where needed. The access scope is on the quote so you see what is involved. Patch responsibility is clarified on the quote (we patch as a separate scope, or you handle).

Does the new circuit need AFCI and GFCI?

AFCI per NEC 210.12 on most dwelling unit branch circuits. GFCI per NEC 210.8 in wet and damp locations (kitchen, bath, garage, outdoor, laundry, within 6 feet of any sink). Dedicated appliance circuits often have specific code requirements (NEC 422 for fixed appliances, NEC 625 for EV chargers, NEC 680 for hot tubs). We tell you on the quote what the specific install requires.

How long does the install take?

A standard dedicated 20A circuit with reasonable cable access typically installs in 3 to 5 hours including the panel termination, the cable pull, and the receptacle install. Longer cable runs, finished-wall fishing, or appliance-specific scope adds time. The quote includes the realistic time estimate.
