Disconnect installation
Disconnect device installed in compliance with NEC 680.22: in sight of the hot tub, not closer than 5 feet to the water, not more than 50 feet from the unit, weather-resistant for outdoor installs (NEMA 3R minimum, NEMA 4X for harsh exposure). Disconnect is non-fusible 60A typical, with the GFCI either at the panel breaker or integrated into the disconnect. The hot tub supply connects from the disconnect to the unit per the manufacturer instructions.Equipotential bonding (in-ground installs)
In-ground spas and hot tubs require equipotential bonding per NEC 680.26. The bonded grid includes the metal parts of the unit, any metal reinforcement in the deck within 5 feet of the unit, metal equipment within the bonded area, and the equipotential bonding grid laid before the deck is poured. Bonding conductor is 8 AWG solid copper minimum. All bonding connections are exothermic weld or listed irreversible compression. Inspection verifies the bonding integrity before the unit can be energized.GFCI protection
GFCI per NEC 680.42 on the supply circuit. Implementation is either a 2-pole GFCI breaker at the panel (most common for 50A circuits with available panel slot) or a GFCI integrated into the disconnect at the hot tub location. NEC 680.26 requires equipotential bonding for in-ground spas and hot tubs, with a bonded grid that includes the metal parts of the unit, the deck reinforcement, and any metallic equipment within 5 feet of the unit. NEC 680.22 covers disconnecting means placement (visible and within 50 feet of the unit, but not closer than 5 feet to the water).
Disconnect placement
The disconnect is a separate device from the main circuit breaker. It must be readily accessible, in sight of the spa or hot tub (no obstruction blocking the line of sight), not closer than 5 feet to the water, and not more than 50 feet from the unit. Outdoor disconnects are weather-resistant rated. Typical install is a 60A non-fusible disconnect on the side of the house or on a post near the hot tub location.
