The Charpentier Historic District covers roughly 40 city blocks of pre-WWII Lake Charles housing, mostly Victorian, Colonial Revival, and Eastlake styles built between the 1880s and the 1920s. This is the largest concentration of pre-electrical-code housing in the city. Drive time from our shop is under ten minutes.
Knob-and-tube wiring is still present in many of these houses, either as the original install or as the first electrical work done after the gas lighting era. We assess what is still in service before anything else. K&T has no equipment grounding conductor, cannot share boxes with NM cable, and cannot be buried in thermal insulation. Any disturbed K&T loses its legacy exception and must be replaced.
60A and 100A services are the norm, and most of these need replacement before any meaningful remodel work. The standard scope is a 200A service-rated meter-main combo on an outside wall, new SE cable from the weatherhead, a new grounding electrode system per NEC 250.53 (or use of existing metal water service if it qualifies under NEC 250.52), and a real load calculation per NEC 220 before the new panel is sized.
Cloth-jacket NM cable, originally installed in the 1940s and 1950s as the first round of K&T replacement, is showing its age. The cloth breaks down at the box terminations and the rubber insulation underneath becomes brittle. We pigtail or replace the last 12 inches of conductor at every device on these circuits to restore safe terminations.
Two-prong receptacles without an equipment grounding conductor are common in living spaces. NEC 406.4 allows replacement with a GFCI-protected outlet labeled “no equipment ground” as an acceptable upgrade where pulling a new ground is impractical. We use this approach in living areas where the customer wants modern receptacles without opening every wall.

Found Hayes Electrical LLC on Angi's List last September to install a home generator. From the initial phone call and every phone call in between these folks are the best. They handled everything. Yes, Charpentier is one of our regular service areas. The district has plenty of late 1800s and early 1900s homes with original wiring, knob-and-tube in attics, and old 60 amp services. We work carefully around historic finishes.
Existing 60 amp service is not automatically illegal, but it cannot support modern HVAC, EV charging, or a major appliance load. We typically upgrade to 200 amp with a new mast, meter base, and panel, run the load calc per NEC 220, and coordinate the Entergy reconnect.
In most cases yes. We fish new circuits through walls and attics with minimal opening, and patch carefully where access is needed. We discuss the access plan with you before we start, so there are no surprises.
Yes, a kitchen rewire requires a city permit and inspection. NEC 210.8 requires GFCI on all kitchen receptacles and 210.12 requires AFCI on the small appliance branches. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.
Yes, Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip on overload, which is a real fire risk in any home and especially one with old wood lath and plaster. We replace the panel with a new Square D or Eaton and re-land all the circuits.
