01 / HOW THIS WORKS

How electrical power restoration works.

Damage assessment

First visit is the assessment. We document every damaged component with photos, write a cause-of-loss summary, and quote the restoration in writing before we start. The assessment is billed at a flat diagnostic rate and credited back if you proceed with the restoration. Insurance carriers usually want this documentation before they release any funds, so we format it for that purpose.

Service mast and weatherhead

The mast is the steel or aluminum conduit running up from the meter base to the weatherhead where the utility drop terminates. After a storm it is the most commonly damaged piece. We replace mast, weatherhead, drip loop, and the service entrance conductors as a single scope. Sizes are matched to the existing service rating, with the option to upsize to 200A while the wall is open.

Meter base and panel

If water entered the meter base or the panel was damaged, both come out. We install a new meter base, route new service entrance conductors, and replace the panel with a current Square D QO, Eaton CH, or Siemens unit sized for the load. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels are replaced as a matter of policy on any restoration because the failed-trip risk on those panels is documented and well-known.

Grounding restoration

Ground rods often get lost in storm cleanup, or the original install never met code. We drive new rods, bond water pipe and gas pipe per NEC 250, and verify the ground impedance against the NEC 250.53 25-ohm threshold. A second rod is added when a single rod cannot meet the threshold. The inspector checks this and a failed ground check is the single most common reason restorations get red-tagged.

Branch circuit recovery

Inside the house, we test every branch circuit for insulation resistance, look for water-damaged junction boxes, and replace any device or wiring that took moisture or heat damage. Circuits that cannot be safely restored are isolated and labeled for follow-up rewire. The objective is a habitable house with safe, code-compliant circuits, even if some non-essential circuits stay offline until later phases.
02 / PROCESS

Our process

01

Site visit and assessment

We come out, walk the damage, take photos, and write the scope on paper. You get the quote, the timeline, and the insurance documentation package before any work starts.

02

Permit pull

Calcasieu Parish AHJ requires a permit for any service entrance, meter base, or panel work. We pull it under our master license and schedule the inspection window.

03

Disconnect coordination

We coordinate with Entergy to pull the meter so we can work the panel cold. The disconnect appointment is typically same-day or next-day for storm restoration.

04

Mast, meter, panel, ground

New mast and weatherhead, new meter base if needed, new panel if needed, new ground rods and bonding. All work to current NEC, not the code year the original install used.

05

Inspection

Calcasieu Parish inspector visits, signs off, and forwards the green tag to Entergy. We are present for the inspection so any field comment gets addressed on the spot.

06

Reconnect and verify

Entergy returns to reset the meter and reconnect the drop. We are on site for the reconnect to test under load, verify polarity, check ground impedance, and confirm every branch circuit comes back live as expected.

  Permits

Permits and inspections

Some jobs need a permit in Calcasieu, some do not. When the parish or city wants one, we pull it under LA Lic #73821, set the rough-in and final inspection, and stay on the job until the inspector signs off. You do not touch the paperwork.

  Warranty

What's covered

Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee on every install. If our work fails because of how we put it in, we come back and fix it at no charge. Documented in writing at handoff and stays with the home.

WANT THIS WARRANTY ON YOUR INSTALL?
Every job we deliver, including electrical power restoration, ships with the Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee in writing. Parts and labor.
  Safety

What we check before recommending a fix

Service entrance work is bonded, locked, and confirmed dead with a Fluke 87V before any conductor is cut. NEC 230 and NEC 250 govern the scope. NEC 250.53 sets the 25-ohm ground impedance threshold and requires a second rod when one cannot meet it. NEC 110.26 working clearance is verified at every panel location. We never re-energize a restored service without the Calcasieu Parish AHJ green tag and the Entergy reconnect. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels are replaced on every restoration because of their documented failed-trip risk.

05 / WHO TO HIRE

Why hiring a licensed electrician matters.

Here is the no-spin cut on electrical power restoration. Same answer we would give a friend in Westlake or Carlyss, whether or not we end up winning the job.

Hayes Electrical

A licensed electrician

LA-licensed master electrician walks every call. Family-owned, owner-led, based in Lake Charles.
Permits pulled under LA Lic #73821 and inspections coordinated with the Calcasieu, Jeff Davis, Allen, or Cameron Parish AHJ when the work calls for it.
Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee in writing. If our work fails, we come back and fix it. Stays with the home.
Insured and carrying workers' comp on every truck that rolls.
Quote on paper before we cut the first wire. The signed number is the number you pay.
A handyman

Unlicensed for electrical

No LA state electrical license. Can swap a fixture, cannot legally touch a panel, a service entrance, or a rewire.
No permits. When the parish or city audits the work later, it does not pass.
No real warranty. "Call me if it breaks" falls apart the day you actually need it.
If unlicensed work starts a fire, your homeowner policy can flat-out deny the claim.
Cash discount sometimes shows up on the invoice. So does the next problem.
DIY

Doing it yourself

Cheap right up until something goes sideways. Most jobs need a load calc, NEC compliance, and a permit.
A failed inspection sends you back to redo it. Selling the house later, the buyer's inspector flags it the same way.
No warranty. The replacement is on you.
Hot wiring is no joke. Most fatal home electrical accidents in this country are DIY.
If you genuinely know what you are doing, fine. If you do not, call us first.
06 / HOW TO TELL IT IS TIME

How to know when it is time, and what to expect.

When to call us in for electrical power restoration

Most electrical power restoration calls fall into one of three patterns: a single component gave out and the symptom is obvious, a slowly loosening connection finally tripped or stopped working, or a previous repair (yours, a handyman, a prior contractor) was never quite right and the underlying issue resurfaced. If the symptom is smoke, sparks, a burning smell, or a panel hot to the touch, do not wait it out. Call the shop. Active hazards get same-day dispatch when capacity allows. Routine repairs go on the next slot, usually inside the same week here in SWLA.

What we walk on the first visit

The first 20 to 30 minutes is eyes and ears: walk the symptom with you, open the panel to spot anything related, trace the affected circuit, find the actual root rather than the easy answer. Most electrical power restoration issues live somewhere other than where the symptom shows (lights flicker from a loose lug at the panel, an outlet quits because the next box downstream has a backstab going bad). The diagnostic is the real job, the price reflects that. We write the scope after the diagnosis, not before.

What electrical power restoration in Lake Charles looks like

Power restoration is the work that happens after a storm, a fire, a flood, or a vehicle hits the service mast. The utility restores the line. We restore everything on your side of the meter. In Calcasieu Parish that means coordinating with Entergy, pulling the Parish permit, and getting the inspection signed off before the meter goes back in.

Hurricane Laura in 2020 left some Lake Charles homes without service for weeks. The bottleneck was not the utility wire, it was waiting for an electrician to repair the homeowner-side mast, weatherhead, and panel so the meter could be reset. We built our restoration workflow around that bottleneck.

What we restore

Typical restoration scopes include service mast and weatherhead replacement, meter base swap, panel repair or replacement, service entrance conductor re-pull, grounding electrode and bonding restoration, and the interior circuit work needed to bring the house back to a habitable state. We work the order the way the inspector wants to see it so the green tag comes the same day.

Working with Entergy

Entergy owns the line drop and the meter. They will not energize a service that has been damaged or opened without an AHJ inspection sticker. The standard sequence is: we pull the permit, we do the work, the Calcasieu Parish inspector signs off, the inspection notice goes to Entergy, Entergy sends a crew to reset the meter and reconnect the drop. The fastest path through that loop is to get the work right the first time, which is what the inspector checks.

NEC and code points that apply

NEC 230 covers the entire service entrance. NEC 250 covers grounding and bonding, which often needs new ground rods if the original ones were lost in the storm or never met the 25 ohm threshold in NEC 250.53. NEC 408 covers the panel itself. NEC 110.26 working clearance is verified at the new panel location if anything is being relocated. For a meter base relocation we coordinate with Entergy for a new service point.

Lake Charles specifics

Older homes in the Charpentier Historic District and Margaret Place often have a 60A or 100A service. After a storm we treat the restoration as the right moment to upgrade to 200A while everything is open, because the per-hour labor cost is much lower with the wall already opened up. We never push the upgrade if the existing service meets your load, but we tell you the math.

Documentation

For insurance restoration claims we provide an itemized cause-of-loss letter, photos of the damaged equipment, photos of the replaced equipment, and the AHJ inspection sign-off. Carriers process these faster than handwritten invoices.

How long restoration typically takes

From the first assessment call to the meter reset, a typical restoration runs 2 to 5 business days for a mast-only or panel-only scope, and 5 to 10 business days for full service restoration (mast, meter base, panel, ground). The bottleneck is usually the Entergy meter-pull and reconnect window, which we schedule as soon as the permit is open. Storm surge work after a major event sometimes stretches longer because of regional contractor backlog and utility scheduling.

What you should not do before we arrive

Do not pull the meter yourself. Do not touch a downed service drop, even if it looks dead. Do not attempt temporary connections to restore power before the restoration is complete and inspected. Call Entergy first to report any downed line on the utility side. Then call us to schedule the homeowner-side restoration. We coordinate from there.

Coordination with other trades

Major storm damage often involves the roofer (mast through-roof flashing replacement), the gas contractor (gas pipe bonding if the service is replaced), the drywall trade (interior wall opening for cable access), and sometimes a tree service (limb removal blocking the service drop). We work alongside them on permitting and scheduling so the trades do not collide on site.

Found Hayes Electrical LLC on Angi's List last September to install a home generator. From the initial phone call and every phone call in between these folks are the best. They handled everything. So kind, helpful and just awesome people. Their workers are very professional, knows their job, all wore work uniforms. We may have had a hiccup once (not their fault) didn't matter they were on top of it thru the entire install. It literally was the easiest install of anything in my house ever!! If I ever need anything I will call Hayes Electrical and no one else. I can't say enough good about these folks. And they are easy to get attached to... their good people🙏 I have to thank Dorian and McKenzie you guys are great!!

My parents have an older home and was having an issue with circuits overloading. We contacted Hayes after seeing they had rave reviews. They sent someone right over, diagnosed the issue and gave us a few pricing package options. We selected the pricing package that was most affordable for us and scheduled their appointment to come back and do the work. On the day scheduled, two gentlemen arrived promptly, did a walk through assessment and helped us understand everything they would be doing and got right to work! They were professional, efficient and very thorough. My parents circuits were rerouted and are working better than ever!

They were really helpful and got to me the next day, a storm came through and my electric box outside got messed up really bad, I only had half of my house working. It was a fire hazard, waiting to happen. I had called many places to come out to look at it and they was putting me off, it was so scary. I was so blessed when I called them the owner came out the same day and said that they could come out the next day to fix it. I thank God this company was so worried about my house catching on fire, so he put me in front of other customers because he was really concerned. I highly Recommend this company Hayes Electric to everyone out there for problems, they were very reasonable, it did not cost me a fortune that I did not have. And by the way to let everyone know they do have a payment plan if you do not have the money at the time of their service. I can't thank them enough for being so concerned about the problem that I had. Again Thank Yall SOOO MUCH AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!! TINA SCHIELE

Hayes Electrical has earned my business in the future. They saved me hundreds of dollars by referring me to Entergy first after hearing what my electrical issues were. They could have made easy money on a service call, and then refer me to Entergy. Instead, they did the right thing and had me contact Entergy first. 5 stars Nice to see a company that didn't take advantage of a customer. ❤️1

Common questions about electrical power restoration

How long does power restoration usually take?

A mast-only repair with no panel damage is a one-day job with a same-week inspection. A full restoration with new mast, meter base, panel, and ground is typically two to three days of work plus the AHJ inspection turnaround and Entergy reconnect window.

Do I need to be home for the work?

You need to be available for the initial assessment and for the Entergy disconnect appointment. The work itself we can do without you present as long as we have access to the panel area. You should be home for the final test and walkthrough.

Will insurance cover this?

Most homeowners policies cover storm and accidental damage to the service mast, meter base, and panel. We provide the cause-of-loss letter and itemized photos your adjuster needs. Coverage decisions and deductibles are between you and the carrier.

Should I upgrade to 200A while the panel is out?

It depends on your load and your plans. If you have or will have a heat pump, an EV charger, a hot tub, or a whole-home generator, 200A is the right move. If the house is small and the load is light, 100A meets code and saves money. We tell you the real math, not just the upsell.

Can you handle the Entergy coordination for me?

Yes. We schedule the meter pull, schedule the reconnect, and submit the inspection sign-off to Entergy. The homeowner does not need to talk to the utility unless billing or account issues come up.

What if my service mast is on the gable end three stories up?

We bring the lift. Most Lake Charles homes are one or two stories and we work off ladders or our service truck boom. Tall jobs get a rental lift added to the quote, which is broken out as a line item so you see exactly what you are paying for.
