How outlet and switch relocation works.
Switch height adjustment
Switches lowered to accessibility height (36 to 44 inches) for wheelchair or aging-in-place. The cable above the existing switch position is fished down to the new box. Wiring path planning
We identify how to route the cable from the existing source to the new box. Sometimes the route is simple (down the same stud cavity). Sometimes it crosses studs or floors and needs access cuts.

Relocation scope, access cuts, patch responsibility, and any device upgrades (tamper-resistant, weather-resistant, GFCI) included as line items.

Old box close-off
Existing box either removed and the wall patched, or fitted with a blank cover plate per NEC 314.29 (no buried boxes), or rewired through as a feed to the new location.

How to know when it is time, and what to expect.
When to call us in for outlet and switch relocation
Most outlet and switch relocation calls in SWLA come up while a homeowner is already planning something else: a remodel, a generator install before the next hurricane season, an EV charger in the carport, or sizing the service to handle a new addition. Walking the property early keeps the sequencing clean. Get us in before the drywall closes and you avoid a rip-out. Get us in before you sign with the GC and you avoid a scope fight. Even if the install is still six months out, a planning walk is welcome.
What we walk on the first visit
We pull the panel cover, check the age and brand (Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco still show up around Lake Charles often enough), look at breaker space and conduit access, and crawl the attic or pier space if the run goes that way. For anything that touches the service drop we coordinate the cut with Entergy or Cleco from day one. The number we hand you is fixed for the scope we walked. Change orders only show up if we find something new in the wall, and you hear about it before we keep going.
What outlet and switch relocation in Lake Charles covers
Relocation moves an existing outlet or switch from its current location to a new one. The wall is the same. The circuit is the same. The device just lives somewhere new. The work is more involved than it looks because the wiring has to be re-routed through the wall cavity to the new box, and the old box has to be properly closed off (or removed and patched, depending on the wall finish).

What relocation actually involves
The new box gets set at the new location. New cable runs from the wiring source (the existing box, an accessible junction point, or the panel) to the new box. The old box either gets removed and the wall patched, or it gets a blank cover per NEC 314.29 (no buried boxes), or the wiring gets re-spliced at the old location into a junction box with cover.
Switch and outlet height standards
Standard switch height is 48 inches to the bottom of the box. Standard outlet height is 12 to 16 inches to the bottom of the box. Accessibility-friendly heights (often used in custom builds and aging-in-place remodels) are 36 to 44 inches for switches and 15 to 18 inches for outlets. NEC does not specify residential outlet and switch heights, so any height is code-compliant; the standards come from custom and practice.
NEC and code points
NEC 314.29 requires boxes to remain accessible (no buried boxes behind drywall without an access cover). NEC 314.16 box fill on the new box. NEC 334.30 cable support on the new run. NEC 110.14 termination practice on every new connection. NEC 250.118 ground continuity preserved on the relocated circuit.
Lake Charles specifics
Older Calcasieu Parish homes sometimes have outlets in locations NEC no longer permits (inside clothes closets per NEC 410.16, in unprotected wet locations without GFCI per NEC 210.8). Relocation often combines with a code correction: move the outlet out of the closet, or move it out of the wet zone. Insurance home inspections sometimes flag these and the right scope is relocation with a NEC-current install, not just a like-for-like move.
Wall finish and patch
The old box leaves a hole. Drywall patch and paint is a separate scope (we patch as a line item, or you handle). New box locations need a clean cutout that the device cover plate covers. We cut clean. The visible wall finish after the relocation is the patch quality, which is a finish trade scope.
Coordination with cabinet and counter installers
Kitchen and bath remodel relocation often coordinates with cabinet, counter, and tile trades. We schedule the electrical relocation between the cabinet rough and the counter install so the new outlet positions match the new layout. The new outlets typically come out at counter-back-splash height (12 to 16 inches above the new counter), which often differs from the original outlet height.
Smart fixture and smart switch upgrades during relocation
Relocation is a good time to upgrade to smart switches or smart outlets because the wiring is already being touched. Smart switches require neutral conductors at the box in most cases; we add neutrals during the relocation if the new switch needs one and the old install did not include it. Smart outlets install in deeper boxes than standard duplexes.
Permit considerations
Single-device relocation within the same room on existing wiring typically does not require a Calcasieu Parish permit. Multi-device relocations as part of a remodel are covered under the remodel permit. New circuit pulls during relocation (when the new location cannot share the existing circuit) do require a permit.
Patch coordination
The old box location leaves a hole that the new device cover plate does not cover. Patch options are: we patch as a line item with basic drywall mud and texture (paint is the homeowner trade or a separate quote), you handle patch with your own drywall trade, or the remodel general contractor includes the patch in their scope. We never leave the relocation with an open hole.

How much does it cost to move an outlet?
A single outlet move on the same wall typically runs $200 to $400 depending on cable run distance and access. A move to a different wall or through floors runs $300 to $700. Wall patch at the old location is a separate scope. We quote on paper.
Can you move my outlet without opening the wall?
Most of the time. A fish tape from the existing box up or down to the new box position works when the cavity is open. Some routes need a small access cut at a stud crossing or at the top plate, which we cut clean. Major reroutes through floors or across rooms always need some access.
Do you patch the wall where the old outlet was?
We can patch as a separate line item on the quote, or you can handle the patch yourself or with a drywall trade. We never leave an open box buried in a wall without an access cover, because NEC 314.29 requires accessibility.
Can I lower the switches in my house for accessibility?
Yes. Standard residential switches at 48 inches can come down to 36 to 44 inches for wheelchair or aging-in-place. The cable above the old switch fishes down to the new box. The old box closes off with a blank cover or patches over.
Does moving an outlet require a permit?

Will the relocated outlet work the same as the original?
Yes. Same circuit, same protection, same load capacity. The only thing that changes is the physical location. If the relocation crosses into a different NEC location requirement (kitchen, bath, garage, outdoor), the new location gets the GFCI and AFCI protection that the new location requires.
