GFCI add to existing receptacle
A standard receptacle replaced with a GFCI to add code-compliant protection to a location where it is now required. The conductor identification (line versus load) determines whether downstream protection is automatic or whether each receptacle needs its own GFCI. When to call us in for GFCI outlet installation

GFCI stands for ground-fault circuit interrupter. The device watches the current difference between the hot and the neutral conductor and trips when the difference exceeds 5 milliamps (the human-shock threshold). Where GFCI is required
NEC 210.8(A) covers dwelling units: bathrooms, garages and accessory buildings, outdoor receptacles, crawl spaces with grade-level access, unfinished basements, kitchens (all countertop and within 6 feet of the sink), sinks (within 6 feet), bathtubs and shower stalls (within 6 feet), laundry areas, indoor damp and wet locations, and boathouses. NEC 210.8(B) extends similar requirements to other than dwelling units. The exact room list depends on the code year the AHJ has adopted.
Receptacle GFCI versus breaker GFCI
A GFCI receptacle protects itself and any downstream receptacles wired on the load side. A GFCI breaker protects the entire branch circuit from the panel out. Both meet code. The receptacle approach is usually cheaper and easier to test from inside the room. The breaker approach centralizes the protection and is sometimes the only practical option when the first device on the circuit is in a hard-to-access location.
NEC and code points
NEC 210.8 covers GFCI locations. NEC 406.4(D)(2) allows GFCI replacement on ungrounded circuits as the code-compliant fix for two-prong receptacle replacement in older homes. NEC 406.12 requires tamper-resistant receptacles in dwelling units. NEC 406.9 requires weather-resistant receptacles in damp and wet locations. NEC 314.16 box fill applies on GFCI receptacles because the device is deeper than a standard duplex.

Older GFCI designs sometimes nuisance-tripped on refrigerator and freezer compressor starts because the inrush current was misread as a ground fault. Current-generation GFCI devices have better signature filtering and handle compressor starts cleanly. If your refrigerator nuisance-trips on a new GFCI install, we move the protection to a current-generation device with better filtering before chasing the circuit.
Testing schedule for GFCI
Manufacturers recommend monthly manual button testing of every GFCI device. The test verifies the protection circuit still works (the device should trip when the test button is pressed; if it does not, the device is at end of life and should be replaced). Most homeowners forget to test, which is why end-of-life GFCI failures often appear as a device that no longer resets, which is actually the designed behavior to force replacement.

How long does a GFCI outlet last?
Outdoor GFCI receptacles last 7 to 10 years in Lake Charles coastal conditions. Indoor GFCI in dry locations last 15 to 20 years. End-of-life shows up as a device that will not reset, which is intentional behavior to force replacement when the protection has degraded.
Why does my GFCI keep tripping?
A real ground fault on the protected circuit (something is leaking current to ground), an end-of-life device, or a wet device cover letting water into the receptacle. Can I replace a GFCI myself?

Do I need GFCI on my refrigerator or freezer outlet?
NEC 210.8 has evolved. Current code requires GFCI on dwelling unit kitchen receptacles. The historical exception for refrigerators was removed in recent code cycles. If the AHJ adopted version requires it, the refrigerator outlet gets GFCI. Nuisance tripping on the refrigerator compressor is a real concern with older GFCI designs and a current-generation device handles it better.
Will GFCI work without a ground wire?
Yes. NEC 406.4(D)(2) allows GFCI on ungrounded circuits. The GFCI watches the line-neutral current difference and trips on imbalance, which does not require a ground reference. The receptacle is labeled "No Equipment Ground" per the code requirement, and grounded-type plugs work in it for the ground-fault protection purpose.
